User Datagram Protocol (UDP) is bare-metal transport. It provides port multiplexing and a checksum, and nothing else.
No handshakes. No acknowledgments. No flow control. UDP fires packets at a destination IP and does not care if they arrive. This lack of overhead makes it ideal for real-time video (where late packets are useless anyway), DNS, and as the underlying substrate for advanced protocols like QUIC.
